S.T.E.A.M House Rocks aims to identify more innovative ways to educate youth and motivate them to invest in themselves and take better control of their lives. After reviewing data and current trends in education, S.T.E.A.M House Rocks has come to learn that many students in underserved communities have stopped engaging in school and doing homework because of the loss of motivation. Another reason why some students are not involved in school because they feel obligated to work and bring money home to their families, so they ditch their school and academic growth for survival.
In addition to that, youth do not have the proper education on how to manage money, healthy spending habits, or know how to save for retirement, how to have good credit scores, or even choosing a college and career that can help and prepare them to handle life and become successful in their community.
To combat these inequities, S.T.E.A.M House Rocks offers the following programs/services:
FULL S.T.EA.M. AHEAD CLUB (Robotics Club)
This program covers the benefits of math, engineering, and science while finding the right balance between art and technology. Through tutoring and mentorship opportunities, participants will become well-rounded in their abilities to navigate academics and critical thinking situations.
The Creative Pod (ARTS AND CRAFTS)
Participants will be exposed to a wide range of arts activities and projects. Participants will learn to paint on canvas, sculpt with clay, design a mask, and much more in this inventive class filled with color, texture, and fun.
Overachievers (STEAM ON WHEELS)
Mobile STEAM labs travel to schools in custom vehicles that can accommodate up to a full classroom of students. The labs often specialize in topics that under-resourced communities struggle to provide. Some of the most popular topics include electronics, computer skills and 3-D printing, music and even dance.
Impact (DROP LAB)
Drop Anywhere Labs provide flexible mobile classroom and laboratory space for middle schools. Mobile STEM education, Drop Anywhere Labs are custom outfitted STEM learning spaces built from shipping containers. Smaller, lighter, and less expensive than trailer labs, Drop Anywhere Labs offer a blend of career and skills education, providing flexible in-classroom resources that empower teachers and serve up to four classes simultaneously.
Mind Over Matter (HEALTH, FITNESS, & RECREATION)
Participants will learn the importance of healthy eating, hygiene, and activities that promote endurance, flexibility, and strength. In addition, participants will learn the basics of sports such as track & field, baseball, softball, basketball, football, and more.
Courageous and Strong (CHARACTER BUILDING)
Participants will engage in various activities to enhance character traits and moral decision-making while learning to work collaboratively with others.
Buying Power (FINANCIAL LITERACY)
Participants will gain a basic understanding of money, its purpose, how it can be earned, budgeting, smart spending, and saving through hands-on activities, role-play, and finance games.
No U-Turn (LIFE SKILLS)
Participants will add to their “life toolbox” by participating in motivating and challenging classes that focus on time management, decision-making, goal-setting, social skills, and effective communication.
Program Approach and Highlights
• S.T.E.A.M House Rocks focuses on critical thinking and problem solving, homework assistance, and individualized skill-building. The goal of all programs is to minimize the math and science learning gaps and to transmit the knowledge of both science and mathematics in the simplest form, which involves real-life problems.
• S.T.E.A.M House Rocks’ trained tutors are certified instructors, experienced teachers, or degreed professionals with tutoring experience. Their passion for teaching and student success encourages them to invent creative and exciting lessons that help youth to understand material better and gain the ability to apply it not only in the classroom but also in the real world.
• Students that come to S.T.E.A.M. House Rocks are assigned to an experienced Academic Coach with a solid academic background. In most cases, the organization’s Academic Coaches have a Teaching, Math, Science, or Engineering degree(s). Not only do the Academic Coaches help students stay organized, but they also help develop robust study and test-taking skills.
• Each will receive one-on-one or small group attention based on specific learning needs. To ensure a convenient schedule for parents and students, tutors are available every day of the week, including weekends.
• S.T.E.A.M House Rocks has a holistic approach to teaching and learning. Not only does the organization take pride in coaching students towards academic excellence, but the organization also works with parents and teachers to ensure students are getting the support needed to achieve success.
